What’s the story behind sanxingdui bronze mask appearing in CCTV Spring Festival Gala?
A bronze mask unearthed from the Sanxingdui ruins is seen on stage during the Spring Festival Gala of the China Media Group on Jan. 31, 2018, the eve of the Lunar New Year. The new Yellow River reporter learned that the large bronze mask is 131cm wide, 71cm high, 66cm deep and weighs 131kg. It is the largest and well-preserved large bronze mask unearthed from sanxingdui Site. Its wide forehead, sharp edges, eyebrows, eyes, lips and other smooth lines, are prominent in the face, thick and long eyebrows as raised, the mask on both sides of the upper and lower and the middle of the forehead have square perforation, may be used for fixed purposes. The bronze mask is a typical artifact of Sanxingdui culture, dating back to more than 3,000 years ago, reflecting the ancient Shu people’s understanding and thinking about the world of natural things and human beings and gods.Sanxingdui site, located in Guanghan City, Sichuan Province, about 40 kilometers south of Chengdu city, is one of the most important ancient sites of the pre-Qin Period in southwest China. In 1986, thousands of bronze sacred trees, bronze Daliren, bronze masks, gold sceptre and other precious cultural relics were excavated in the first and second “sacrificial pits”. The Sanxingdui site was thus “awakened and shocked the world”, attracting worldwide attention.Since December 2019, under the guidance and support of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, sichuan Provincial Bureau of Cultural Heritage has organized the Sichuan Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and other units to discover six new “sacrificial pits” in the same area as the first and second “sacrificial pits”, which are numbered as no. 3 to No. 8 respectively. At the beginning of 2021, archaeologists began excavating “sacrificial pit” No. 3.By January 30, relatively complete bronzes began to emerge. On March 16, the cultural relics buried in the pit were fully displayed, including bronzes, jade and stone tools, gold ware and ivory. The bronze mask is located in the southern part of the middle of the no. 3 pit. It is the first bronze object to emerge, which is particularly eye-catching.On June 23, 2021, the mask was extracted from the pit.Archeologists and preservationists have analyzed and studied the casting process of the bronze mask, and believe that it was made by casting the face, the back of the cheek, the eyes, the ears and other parts separately, and then assembled into a whole. The silk fabric residue with warp and weft tissue was found in the right eye of the mask.As a major project of “archaeological China”, the excavation of Sanxingdui site is also a typical representative of China’s century-old archaeological achievements. Since its discovery in 1929, several generations of archaeologists have continued their century-old efforts to explore the roots of civilization.By the end of 2021, more than 10,000 numbered cultural relics have been unearthed from only six newly discovered sacrificial pits in Sanxingdui, including gold masks, top statues, round square statues, large masks, altar models, kneeling bronze figures, and more than 500 ivory tusks. Some of them can be viewed up close in sanxingdui’s open cultural Relics Restoration Hall. Many cultural relics, such as Tong Zun, Tong Lei, Yu Zhang and Yu Cong, show the close connection between Shu and the culture of the Central Plains and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, demonstrating the historical development process of diversified integration of Chinese civilization. The impressive bronze mask on spring night not only makes people appreciate the gorgeous and colorful bronze civilization, but also lamenting the extensive and profound Chinese civilization, but also further increases the public’s interest in understanding archaeology, understanding archaeology, and absorbing spiritual nourishment from archaeology. We have learned, in order to ensure the security of sanxingdui relics gala show, state administration of cultural heritage field screening security detail, guiding support administration bureau of sichuan province, sichuan province cultural relic institute of archaeology and sanxingdui museum in conjunction with the major cultural relics exhibition transportation unit, transfer business backbone, special working team of cultural security precision, implement the protection of cultural relics reinforcement plan,The safety of cultural relics has been ensured by carefully organizing and implementing the protection, transportation, preservation and exhibition of cultural relics.Source: New Yellow River
